ILM vs CMI coaching qualifications: Level 5 routes, practice and assessment
Compare the exact qualification, the units your centre has chosen, and how much genuine coaching you will deliver and have observed.
Compare the exact qualification, the units your centre has chosen, and how much genuine coaching you will deliver and have observed. Two courses can both be called a "Level 5 Certificate in coaching" and involve very different amounts of actual coaching.
This compares the two current coaching-specific suites: City & Guilds/ILM 8588 Effective Coaching and Mentoring, and CMI Level 5 Professional Coaching Practice. CMI's older Management Coaching & Mentoring suite is a different, previous set of qualifications, so check which one a provider is actually selling you.
Keep three things apart. A qualification in these suites is awarded by City & Guilds or CMI through an approved centre. Membership of a professional body is a subscription. An individual coaching accreditation from ICF, EMCC or the Association for Coaching is assessed separately, against that body's own criteria. Finishing a Level 5 qualification does not award you the third one, and a syllabus reference to ICF, EMCC or AC competency frameworks does not establish programme accreditation or confer an individual credential. What you are actually buying
ILM 8588 is awarded by The City and Guilds of London Institute. The current qualification handbook is January 2025, version 2.1, and it covers two awards (ILM 8588 handbook):
- City & Guilds Level 5 Certificate in Effective Coaching and Mentoring, 8588-21/24, qualification number 603/3758/8.
- City & Guilds Level 5 Diploma in Effective Coaching and Mentoring, 8588-31/34, qualification number 603/3759/X.
CMI Level 5 Professional Coaching Practice is a suite of four, set out in the March 2026 version 09 syllabus (CMI Level 5 Professional Coaching Practice syllabus; note the file name still says v01, so read the cover): Award 5A36 (610/0903/9), Certificate 5C36 (610/0904/0), Diploma 5D36 (610/0905/2) and Extended Diploma 5XD36 (610/0906/4). CMI's Qualifications List v14, September 2026, shows all four as current, with 31 May 2027 in the review-date column and the operational and certification end columns blank. CMI states that a review date does not represent an end date (CMI qualifications list).
ILM's handbook says 8588 has been available since 1 November 2018 and sends readers to the Walled Garden or Online Catalogue for last registration and certification dates. The handbook does not establish the current last registration and certification dates. If a course start date matters to you, ask the centre to confirm current registration in writing.
Level, qualification size and coaching hours
Both suites sit at Level 5 and they are not the same size. Same level means comparable demand, not comparable volume, and it does not make either a foundation degree or an automatic employer requirement.
Guided learning hours are time under a tutor's direction. Total qualification time and CMI's total unit time are notional estimates of everything, including your own study and assessment. Neither is a count of hours coaching clients. CMI's figures are also minima: the units your centre selects can add up to more.
What coaching will you actually do?
ILM sets fixed practice requirements. Unit 501, in the Certificate, requires you to plan, deliver and record at least 18 hours of coaching or mentoring with a minimum of two and a maximum of three individuals, and to evidence at least one hour of supervision feedback. Unit 502, in the Diploma, raises that to at least 54 hours with a minimum of four and a maximum of nine individuals, and at least three hours of supervision feedback. For the Certificate, the handbook permits a fourth individual only in exceptional circumstances after all other options have been exhausted; the centre must record its reasons and the options considered. The handbook says the supervisor should observe you in practice and give real-time feedback at least once, and that a recording may be used where that is not possible. Both ILM units allow coaching or mentoring in an organisational context.
CMI practice requirements depend on the units. Units 531, 532, 533 and 535 are knowledge-based. Unit 534, Professional Coaching Practice, is not: it requires two coaching assignments, each with at least three coaching sessions, each session lasting between 60 and 90 minutes. You must be observed for at least one hour per assignment, in person, virtually or by recording, with written feedback from an observer who is a professional coach, coach supervisor or member of a professional coaching body. The syllabus states that "simulation exercises are not an acceptable form of assessment", and that the coaching must be delivered in a real working environment. You also produce a professional development plan covering six to twelve months.
A CMI Certificate built from 531 and 532 is knowledge-based unless the centre adds practice of its own. A CMI Certificate that includes 534 has mandated, observed coaching with real coachees. Unit 534 carries 15 credits and 150 TUT on its own, which is above the Certificate's 14-credit minimum, so the arithmetic allows a practice-heavy Certificate as well as a knowledge-only one. Ask which units the centre has chosen before you compare anything else.
Unit 534 cannot be selected as part of the Award. CMI's centre-approval rules state that Registered Centres offer only the knowledge units 531, 532, 533 and 535, because those do not require approved assessors to observe and collate evidence, while Units 534, 536 and 537 sit with Fully Approved Centres and must be assessed and internally quality assured at the centre. The external marking service is available only for the knowledge units. The syllabus prints the observation note under both centre types in the Unit 534 section, which reads inconsistently against that general rule, so if your centre's status is borderline, get CMI's own confirmation rather than relying on either paragraph.
What you will submit
ILM's Certificate and Diploma are assessed through an assignment, a portfolio and a reflective journal, marked pass or referral, with assessment and quality assurance at the centre. The portfolio evidences your contracting, session records, goals and progress, feedback from clients and your supervisor, and ongoing reflection reviewed with your tutor or supervisor. Centres may use their own evidence formats, though ILM's own assessment service requires its supplied templates.
CMI's Unit 534 asks for records of the coaching assignments, such as coaching notes and a reflective log, written observation feedback, work-based evidence indexed against each assessment criterion, and the professional development plan. Your centre's assessment plan, agreed with its CMI quality manager, decides the specific format.
Follow your centre's requirements for anonymisation, consent and secure submission. Agree recording separately from consent to be coached, and check the data-protection duties that apply to the evidence you hold or share.
What varies by provider
Centres can provide practice and support beyond the awarding body's minimum. Between two centres offering the identical qualification, these can differ completely: the timetable and total elapsed time, how much practice is supported rather than left to you, who your tutor and supervisor are and what they hold, how much feedback you get, whether the centre helps you find coachees, what happens if you need to resubmit, and what the fee includes.
Can outside practice count?
Your centre must check the arrangement against the awarding body's requirements. The question to ask is whether a specific proposed arrangement meets the unit's criteria: real coachees with genuine goals for CMI's Unit 534, an organisational context for ILM's units, an observer who meets the stated requirements, and evidence in an acceptable format.
Do not import rules from elsewhere. ICF's treatment of barter and peer-to-peer coaching as paid experience is an ICF rule for ICF credentials, and says nothing about what your centre will accept for assessment. A practice partner or matching platform cannot approve assessment evidence for your centre.
Ask: "Will these proposed sessions satisfy this unit's criteria? Please confirm in writing before I arrange them."
After you finish
ILM's learner registration is valid for three years, after which a learner who has not completed should be re-registered. That is a completion window for you, not a renewal cycle for the award.
CMI gives free Affiliate membership until you complete your studies if you were not already a member. Foundation Chartered Manager is a separate professional status and a step on the route towards full Chartered Manager, which has its own assessment and experience requirements. It is not a "Chartered Coach" title, and it does not follow automatically from a qualification. CMI's current Foundation Chartered Manager page lists "Level 5 in Coaching & Mentoring (Award or Certificate)" among eligible qualifications, which is not the current Professional Coaching Practice title or its qualification numbers (CMI Foundation Chartered Manager). Public sources do not settle whether 5A36 or 5C36 currently qualify. If that status is part of why you are enrolling, ask CMI directly and get the answer in writing.
If you want ICF, EMCC or AC individual accreditation afterwards, treat that as a separate application with its own requirements, and ask the body about your exact course and application route.
A worked comparison
Three illustrative unit combinations, not verified offers from particular providers. Each shows the practice required by its units.
The 531 and 532 combination is 15 credits, 150 TUT and 44 GLH, calculated from the current unit values rather than the Certificate's published minimum of 14 credits and 140 TUT. That is how CMI's rules of combination work: your centre's chosen units, not the suite minimum, describe your course.
Enrolment checklist
Ask every centre the same questions, and keep the answers next to the fee.
- The exact qualification title, qualification number, syllabus or handbook version, and the units I will take.
- Whether you are approved to deliver those specific units, and what your centre approval status is.
- The minimum genuine coaching I must deliver, with how many coachees, and over what period.
- Whether coachees from outside my organisation, or peers, are acceptable for these units.
- Who observes me, what they hold, in what format, and how the feedback reaches me.
- Whether supervision is included in the fee or charged separately.
- What contracts, anonymisation and recording consents you require, and whose templates I use.
- Which record templates you supply, and who signs off the evidence.
- Tutorial access, accessibility arrangements, delivery dates and the completion window.
- What happens if I have to resubmit, and what that costs.
- The total cost, including registration, assessment, resits, membership and certification.
- And, for anything you plan to arrange yourself: will these proposed sessions satisfy the unit's criteria? Please confirm in writing before I arrange them.

Before relying on registration or progression promises
- Ask the centre which ILM product code it will register you on and confirm the current last registration and certification dates. The handbook pairs 8588-21/24 and 8588-31/34 against single titles and qualification numbers without explaining the suffixes.
- Ask CMI whether 5A36 or 5C36 currently qualify for Foundation Chartered Manager; the public eligibility list uses a different qualification title.
- If a Registered Centre offers Unit 534, ask CMI to resolve the conflicting wording before relying on that offer. The unit note does not resolve its conflict with the general centre-approval rule.
