What do you need for an ICF credential application?

An International Coaching Federation (ICF) application needs evidence of coach-specific education, eligible client experience, mentor coaching and coaching assessment. Your application path determines the documents you supply. You also need to meet the ethics and fee requirements, and satisfy the exam requirement. ICF invites you to schedule the exam after accepting your application; booking it is not a prerequisite to submission.

This guide covers applications for Associate Certified Coach (ACC), Professional Certified Coach (PCC) and Master Certified Coach (MCC), using the September 2026 source record. The announced 2027 changes have their own section below. Renewal is a separate process.

Identify your level and application path

The experience requirements are 100 hours, including 75 paid, with at least eight clients for ACC; 500 hours, including 450 paid, with at least 25 clients for PCC; and 2,500 hours, including 2,250 paid, with at least 35 clients for MCC. ACC needs at least 25 hours and PCC at least 50 hours within the 18 months before applying, paid or unpaid. ICF's experience page states no equivalent MCC recency minimum. MCC also requires that you hold or have held PCC; ACC is not a prerequisite for PCC.

Education totals are at least 60 hours for ACC, 125 for PCC and 200 for MCC. Use the credential comparison if you have not chosen a level. These figures come from ICF's experience guidance and credential overview.

Your path depends on the education you completed. Completing a full accredited programme can fulfil mentoring and assessment within the programme; Portfolio applicants supply evidence for ICF to review directly. Use ICF's application guidance to identify your path, especially with mixed, partial or legacy training. Do not assume a Level 1 certificate fulfils PCC's assessment requirement.

Check education composition and the experience start date

Portfolio applicants need the following education breakdown, with all Core Competencies covered:

For Continuing Coach Education (CCE) and non-accredited courses, ICF requests completion certificates or signed letters, programme names and dates, synchronous/asynchronous breakdowns, and curriculum evidence. Non-accredited education is subject to review. Consult the complete education requirements for your evidence type.

Experience counts only after qualifying coach-specific education begins. ICF's experience page summarises the start as a course of at least 30 hours with at least 24 Core Competency hours. The ACC, PCC and MCC candidate guides give more specific programme-type and 80% competency-content conditions. For a longer course, 24 competency hours alone may be insufficient. Confirm borderline education with ICF rather than treating the shorter website definition as an eligibility ruling.

Audit eligible experience before adding it up

Count real-time coaching delivered to a client who hired you specifically as their coach. Shorter sessions count as partial hours: sum qualifying delivered minutes and divide by 60. A 30-minute session contributes 0.5 hours. Being coached, preparing, giving feedback or doing admin adds no delivered client-coaching time.

Payment includes money or agreed barter, including an exchange of coaching. Internal coaching can be paid experience when it is part of your job responsibilities, but coaching your direct reports does not count. Third-party coaching can be paid when an organisation pays you to coach a client. An organisation arranging unpaid charity work does not make it paid; donated coaching with no compensation is pro bono. Paid thresholds are floors, not pro bono caps.

ICF excludes mentor coaching, supervision and reviewing assessments with clients. Roleplays and AI rehearsal fail the real-client test. Coaching within a training programme, or with students, trainers or mentors, must be outside the classroom, with a real client and separate from training credits to count. An independent session with a coursemate can qualify; a classroom exercise for course credit does not.

In team and group coaching, participants must set the agenda and interact in real time. Teaching, training and workshops do not qualify as client coaching. Only groups of 15 or fewer count unless co-coached; split coaching time between co-coaches. Each participant counts as a client, but time is not multiplied: coaching 15 people for one hour gives one experience hour, not fifteen. Resolve overlap when counting people who also appear in individual or other group records.

Complete the mentoring requirement

You need ten hours over at least three months, with at least three individual hours. The remaining seven may be individual or in groups of no more than ten. Mentor coaching focuses on your coaching against the ICF Core Competencies; supervision does not replace it.

Under the current mentor-coaching requirements:

• ACC applicants use a valid ACC who has renewed at least once, or a valid PCC or MCC.
• PCC applicants use a valid PCC or MCC.
• MCC applicants use a valid MCC. MCC Portfolio hours must be new, not hours used for a prior credential.

A completed ACC Level 1/Level 2, PCC Level 2 or MCC Level 3 programme fulfils the mentoring requirement for that path. Ask your provider what its completion evidence covers. For current direct mentoring documentation, retain the mentor's name, email, credential level, relationship dates and completed hours. New mentor eligibility rules begin in 2027.

Prepare the right assessment evidence

Under the current performance-evaluation rules, ACC Portfolio applicants submit one audio recording with a transcript; PCC Portfolio applicants submit two; MCC applicants submit two on both Level 3 and Portfolio paths.

The programme's completed evaluation fulfils the requirement for ACC Level 1/Level 2 and PCC Level 2 applicants without a separate submission to ICF. Check your path before assuming you must submit recordings directly to ICF. Your programme may still require recorded work.

Before recording, obtain written client permission to record and use the session for performance evaluation. Submitted audio must be a complete, unedited 20–60-minute session with a real, regular client, not a scripted session or training exercise. Only audio is accepted. Transcripts must be verbatim, identify each speaker on separate lines, include timestamps at every speaker change, and use .doc or .docx. Read the complete file, language and submission rules before preparing your files; this paragraph is not the technical specification.

The exam is separate. ACC uses the ACC Exam; PCC and MCC use the ICF Credentialing Exam. The PCC Candidate Guide waives a resit when an applicant passed the ICF Credentialing Exam for ACC and applies within 12 months. The MCC guide gives the corresponding waiver for an applicant who passed it for PCC and applies within 12 months. Passing the newer ACC Exam does not meet that same-exam condition.

Identify which requirement applies now, then follow ICF's scheduling invitation after application acceptance, or confirm an applicable prior-pass waiver.

Keep private evidence; report totals

You report your hours and attest that they meet ICF's standards. You do not submit a detailed client coaching log with the application. ICF audits some applications and gives specific verification instructions; even during an audit, it says you will not be asked to submit coaching logs directly.

Document consent before storing identifying client details, in line with relevant privacy law. If a client does not consent, omit the name; ICF warns those sessions could not be verified in an audit. For individual clients, retain consented names and contact information, relationship start/end dates, and paid/pro bono totals. Group records are separate and need one participant's name and email, engagement dates, participant count and paid/pro bono hours.

Where an organisational confidentiality policy prevents logging internal or third-party client identities, obtain a signed company-letterhead reference. It must include your name, the contact's name and contact information, both roles, confirmation of the confidentiality policy, hours coached, client count and period covered. Reconcile letter-supported hours and clients with other records once; do not infer recent hours from a broad date span. False or misleading information can lead to denial or revocation of a credential and a reapplication bar of up to five years under ICF's experience and integrity guidance.

Before-you-apply worksheet

This is an editorial worksheet, not an ICF form or eligibility decision. Fill it from records, separating pre-submission evidence from later exam scheduling.

Fictional example: a coach has 118 eligible logged hours, including 61 paid hours, across six clients. Only 19 hours fall within the relevant 18 months. For ACC, they still need 14 paid hours, two more clients and six recent hours. Their mentoring finished in eight weeks, so it also fails the three-month minimum.

Announced 2027 changes

The following assessment transition applies to ACC and PCC Portfolio applications. It does not replace MCC performance evaluations. ICF's 2027 ACC/PCC support article gives the dates:

Ten mentoring hours over at least three months, including at least three individual hours, remain required. Earlier eligible mentoring remains usable, but April-onward ACC/PCC Portfolio applications also need the specialised mentor's Competency Review Form. Read the ACC or PCC bridging guidance alongside the newer article; older support wording is not fully consistent about terminology and transition headings. Completed ACC Level 1/Level 2 and PCC Level 2 programme certificates remain accepted.

Keep the Session Observation Forms from enhanced mentoring. ICF's announcement says these are required if that application is audited. They are separate from the private client coaching log that ICF says not to submit directly.

For MCC, new mentoring from 1 January must be with an MCS-MCC. MCC performance evaluations remain; earlier eligible mentoring and completed Level 3 certificates remain accepted. Read the separate MCC transition guidance.

Before submitting, resolve every blank evidence cell against the current guidance for your path and intended date. Treat the exam row as preparation for the later invitation, not an instruction to book in advance.
